Mindfulness Meditiation
Mindfulness Meditation I have discovered a different type of meditation which focuses on mindfulness skills. It is a method of training the mind to focus on unpleasant or unhappy thoughts without pain. The beginning focus is on your breath, being aware as it fills and empties your lungs, how each individual breath feels as in goes in and out of your nostrils, throat and lungs, cool on the way in and warm on the way out, how it expands your diaphragm and moves from the top of your head to the tip of your toes. By focusing on an unpleasant thought which could be a financial difficulty, strain in a relationship or a problem with your employment, you are taught to analyze how the thought makes you feel physically. Does it make your face feel tight, as though there is a lump in your throat, your stomach cramp or tighten, your fingers clench into a fist. Then you analyze further into describing it as a shape, is it fluid or static, hot or cold, does it have a color etc. By analyzing your physical reaction to an unpleasant thought, you move away from thinking about the actual thought into the realm of how you react to it. Once the focus is on the physical you can work on methods of changing them. Is it possible to make the tightness or cramp take up a smaller space, can it be dissolved, melted or have it's color changed to something soothing? Can it be pushed down the body and out through the feet? You are teaching your mind that the original unpleasant thought does not have to hurt or frighten you, it can be made to change or go away. With practice, you can deflect the pain of feelings so you can move on from them. Learn to observe your thoughts and feelings without judging them. If you notice them intruding just acknowledge them and let them leave again. Don't dwell on them, just focus back on your breathing and let the unpleasant thoughts or feelings go. Don't tell yourself that this feeling is 'bad' or 'good', just be non judgmental and let it go. With practice you will be able to observe yourself letting the feelings go, and with them the unpleasant physical side effects. After an hour of mindfulness meditation I was worried that I would want to relax or go to sleep. On the contrary, I felt alert and energized and ready to work.
